                                                   In this sheet for the design of combined footing for equal over hang , analysis is shown in the same sheet & on the basis of analysis,design come automatically in the same sheet with BMD. As an input,you need to put reaction of two columns, centre to centre distance between two columns, SBC and rest of the out put like +ve and -ve moment,base pressure and thickness checking for one way and two way will  come automatically.  This excel sheet is going to help many civil engineers entered or trying to make a career  in the field of structural engineering. It is also very helpful to many practicing structural engineers as well. In this attached sheet, you will find beam designed with deflection check with modification factors for tension and compression reinforcement. Normally in STAAD, you can find out deflection for any beam but that is not appropriate. STAAd give deflection with respect to stiffness only without considering the role of tension and compression reinforcement. But, here in this sheet you will find complete beam design with different check like singly or doubly reinforced beam, under or over reinforced beam along with deflection check with appropriate modification factors as per fig. 4& 5 in IS-456-2000.

                                My main aim is to bring treasure that is hidden in this sheet is to evaluate modification factor for tension and compression steel directly from this sheet rather than from figure No-4 & figure No-5. Calculating modification factors from fig-4 & 5 is quite seditious and we can’t correctly take value from this.

                                You can ask what innovation I have done to convert all those difficultly to simplicity. Actually I have used SP-24, an explanatory handbook on Indian Standard code of practice for Plain and reinforced concrete. There is an empirical formula on this explanatory handbook on basis of which graph for fig -4 & 5 has been developed in  IS 456:2000. I have used this empirical formula directly in the excel sheet. There is no need to do any interpolation.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND FOR STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS & DESIGNING OF BUILDING

Hello! Structural Engineering Fraternity

       I am a Structural Engineer. My main work frame is to analyse & design simple to complex structure. I encourage many young civil engineers who have just passed out  from college and want to make a career in Structural Engineering.Also, my blogs will work as a tonic to some civil engineers who are already in this field but feeling very low due to lack of knowledge and skills. My blogs are certainly going to bring not only their professional growth but also they will start loving this challenging field.It will indulge them to be more innovative.

        I believe in 4’S&DE.

        S= Stability, S= Strength, S=Stiffness, S=Sustainability, D= Durability & E= Economy

         4’S&DE is my basic principle of analysing and designing any structure and same shall be followed by any Structural Engineers.I have seen many engineers who sometime think, if a structure is having sufficient strength against shear, moment and torsion instead of lacking in stiffness and durability, it looks fine to them. But i want to clarify one vital point, without having proper knowledge of deflection check(Based on Stiffness),Durability Check(Based on proper grade of material selection, life time exposure of structure to environment) and Economy (Based on client’s budget) no Structural Engineer is going to be very successful in their field.

         My friends, if you want to make a career as a RCC Designer, then it is very important for you to understand deeply about concrete technology. Until & unless ,you are able to understand the chemical reaction tacking place in concrete and adherence it’s hydration product to different deleterious gases and chemicals in the environment,you will not be able to judge which materials like  PPC or OPC or sulphate resisting cement is most suitable as far as durability is concern.You will be astonished by knowing the fact,sulphate reacts with the C-H-S gel(hydration product of cement) and concrete gets expanded by 300% by volume. You can feel now to what extent it can damage concrete by developing cracks and it further give path to ingress other deleterious chemicals like chloride to reach reinforcement. Also we should have knowledge about high performance concrete like high flow concrete & self compacting concrete where there is a congestion of reinforcement to avoid honey combing.

        And last one is economy. It requires rigorous analysis or you can say this is the most tedious part. In order to design building under the specified budget, we require lot of  reiteration process giving optimum member size fulfilling 4’SD.

         My main area of blog writing is to cover  4’SDE. Time to time, i will share excel sheets that will help not only freshers but also practising engineers.Also, i will regularly update you with some hand calculation for the analysis and designing of  simple frame and structural elements to bring you all to the basic. Please keep in mind, in fast pace of working environment, we are forgetting our basics and it is becoming very disastrous for all of us.Above all,i believe in sharing of knowledge and skills.What is the use if somebody is having huge knowledge and skills & carrying all these  to grave. I think,noting at all. I have realised this now and understood the importance of sharing. So, hope somebody will get benefit from my sharing. Also believe, even if a single person is able to uplift his/her career,then my blog writing will be successful.

       Most importantly, even a practising structural engineers will find something very new and innovative in my blog.

EXAMPLE ON DEFLECTION CALCULATION FOR CANTILEVER BEAM SUBJECTED TO UDL & POINT LOAD,SERIES-1

       In this series-1, i have come up with very simple example with a cantilever beam with point load and distributed load and calculated maximum deflection at tip of beam with different methods. Well known method that i have used to calculate deflection  are:

                     1.   Unit load method /Virtual Method

                     2.   Moment Area Method

                     3.   Strain energy Method(Based on Castigliano’s Method)

                     4.   Conjugate beam method

         In this attached sheet, i have solved very simple two examples with above four method. Whatever method is best suited to you, you can adopt it and all of these will give same result. I have give name, Series-1 because i will upload many examples for calculation for deflection of beams  which will come in another Series like Series-2, Series-3 etc.

           Structural engineers are more concerned about to check deflection for cantilever beams and lateral drifting of whole structure due to wind or earthquake. All buildings are vertical cantilevers. As a structural engineers, our main assignment is to check maximum drifting at the top floor. This calculation could be carried out with simple calculation. By taking shear walls as a single entity and attracting definite portion of earthquake load, having flexural rigidity  “EI”, and height “h” , we can calculate deflection at the top floor to check whether deflection at the top floor is under permissible limit or not.

         We will go in deep to earthquake and wind loading topic in my later blogs.

EXAMPLE ON DEFLECTION CALCULATION FOR CANTILEVER BEAM SUBJECTED TO TRIANGULAR LOAD,SERIES-2

In Continuation to Series-1 for the deflection calculation for Cantilever beams, now i am going to share you with an example of cantilever beam subjected to to triangular loading.This series is titled as “Series-II” .As a structural engineer, you are always going to evaluate deflection calculation for vertical cantilever (assembling of  walls and columns) for earth and water retaining purpose.In that case, triangular loading is common. It’s calculation is quite easy. In this section too, i am going to solve an example with three standard methods like:

            1. Unit Load Method

            2. Moment Area Method

            3. Conjugate Beam Method

            Whichever method is most suitable to you, adopt it accordingly. Although, many Structural Engineer know much in depth about it but i am sure this section is going  to bring them all to the basic and certainly they will find something very new in this.Also,it will help them to refresh their basic knowledge. Apart from this,this example is going to be a very big boost to the beginner. Actually in college days,civil engineers solve deflection for different loading but without knowing reason and practical application & they generally do not not know why there is a different loading pattern for different circumstances.Now they will understand, why they were used to solve numerical on triangular loading. Genuinely, at that time of academic level, purpose was not clear but after coming to practical field, they will understand,why it is essential to know application of different load patterns like point loads, uniformly distributed load, triangular load, trapezoidal load,concentrated moment etc.at different circumstances.

EXAMPLE ON DEFLECTION CALCULATION FOR CANTILEVER BEAM SUBJECTED TO TRAPEZOIDAL LOAD,SERIES-3

In continuation to Series-(I) & Series-(II) for the deflection calculation for uniformly distributed loading and triangular loading, now read this article here for the deflection calculation for a cantilever beam for trapezoidal loading.

 Here an example has been solved for a trapezoidal loading with an intensity of load “w” at the tip of beam and “2w” at the fixed end of the cantilever beam.

             Deflection has been calculated by Unit Load Method/Virtual Method by superposition principle. Please go through the example to understand better about the concept. As said in my previous blog,it is highly recommended to understand the fact ,why do we study trapezoidal loading and where is it’s application. Actually whenever you will design foundation for a column subjected to  axial load along with moment,base pressure diagram will not be uniform. Because base pressure at one end will be maximum ( P/A+M/Z )and at other end it will be minimum( P/A-M/Z).Where, P= Axial Force, A= Total Area, M=Bending Moment, Z= Section Modulus.Connecting with a line for maximum and minimum value of pressure will give a pressure diagram which is trapezoidal in shape. Same thing happens when you design a base plate  or anchor plate having column subjected with axial load & moment. Base  pressure is  generated from top of pedestal in the same way.

              So, it is essential to know, how to calculate bending moment and deflection at critical section for the design of footing or base plate which is subjected to axial load along with moment. In this blog, i have tried to explain same thing with an example.

Note: My blog is not for those who are addicted to software only like STAAD, ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, ANSYS etc. and many more.People who believe in, put the value and get the result is suggested not to read my blog.It is not going to help them. Certainly, my blog is going to help a lot to those people who believe in manual calculation.To be a good structural engineer, it is better to be more focused & monomaniacal to manual calculation & check rather than software addiction.It will help you to feel the structure.
